A green and blue economy begins with equality and ends with progress.” On Tuesday, May 27, Zefi Dimadama, President of the Athens branch of the EGE (Greek Women’s Union), together with the Board of Directors, organized a special event, rich in dialogue, titled: “Women at the Forefront of Sustainable Development” at the Eugenides Foundation.With a core focus on the importance of equality and the active participation of women in shaping sustainable development policies, the conference was structured around four thematic sections.
The pillar “Women and the Economy” was focused on the opportunities and challenges women face in the business world, emphasizing green growth and social innovation. Vera Alexandropoulou noticed at her speech that beyond the maritime sector and the blue economy, the contribution of women to the global economy and entrepreneurship is pivotal for sustainable development.Studies by the IMF and the World Bank show that increasing women’s participation could add trillions to global GDP. The section “Women and the Environment” highlighted the crucial contribution of women to environmental protection and the enhancement of climate resilience. Maria Damanaki mentioned that globally, a new strategy must be devised, based on the principle that environmental protection is not only an environmental issue but also a very important economic and social one. She also informed the attendees of the event about the action of the network Leading Women for the Ocean (LWO). Under “Women and Culture”, we showcased the creative blend of tradition and modern expression through women’s presence in cultural life. Finally, the theme “Women and Society” concentrated on social cohesion, the elimination of gender-based violence, and the promotion of equality in education, justice, and public life.
